WTB: SDI Cable - Suggestion on a type and a vendor
« on: March 10, 2017, 07:38:40 PM »

Looking to buy some long runs of SDI cable for an upcoming show to run video signal.

Below are the runs I'm looking for

2 - 300ft
2 - 200ft

Basically want to get a quality cables to not have any video issues. Was thinking about getting this reel and just making the cables:

Would welcome any suggestions, thanks!

Are you looking for finished cables or raw cables and connectors so you can build your own?

I like Belden 1505F but 300' is probably more than you can count on. I'd suggest Belden 1694F which has lower loss but isn't nearly as flexible as 1505F.

Kings, Belden, and Canare all make good connectors. Make sure you get the right tools of you choose to make your own.

Hi Philip, thanks for the help. I was thinking about getting this cable which I just updated the post with.

1694A is designed for installation use so it's pretty stiff and has a hard jacket rather than a soft jacket like 1694F. If it's only being used a few times 1694A vs 1694F won't make a huge difference.

For length/loss should be fine.

The 1505A is much less stiff than the 1694A and yet easily capable of 200ft for HD-SDI.  Any longer or 3G, I would use a DA.

The 1694WB has identical electrical characteristics to the 1694A, but is designed for direct burial and underground conduit runs.  Perhaps due to its gel filling (the water block) I find it slightly easier to work with than the 1694A.

BTW the plenum version 1695A is not recommended for portable use -- while it is a smaller diameter cable (thus easier to work with), its jacket is quite thin.

You will save a lot of money making your own cables, but the tool is not cheap.  What you'll need for the 1694A (and Gepco's equivalent VSD2001):
King KTH-1000 crimp tool
King KTH-2325 die
King 2065-10-9 BNC connector

The vsd2001 is getting hard to find.   I prefer the multiple colors for installs....   full compass told me there would be no more than what exists in the world now....

I use the 1694A and get it in blue so it is different than my audio cables. it is indeed a bit stiffer but much more durable IMO and have not had any issues with it. Coils much better then a twisted up XLR.

They will custom build to any spec if not listed on their site.

If you are a reseller you can get set up on their dealer site for even better pricing:

I've used miles of west penn 6350 with great success.  It's install cable so stiff.  Properly terminated it will handle your distances fine.
