X32 core gut shot (internal pics ) anyone have m32c to compare ?
« on: February 01, 2017, 12:06:28 PM »

Hi guys ,

I just grabbed a x32 core for really cheap and took a few pics of the inside , I'm super curious to see the inside of a m32 core to compare ....

Only Cirrus chip I see inside is a cs42438-cmz

That's an A/D chip probably for the headphone input.

The cores run in the digital domain.  I would not expect it to have any type of dedicated DSP.  All done in logic on FPGA's or something newer.

All of the channel and fx processing requires the dsp.

The x32-core pcb is actually the same as in the x32-rack. Some spots are not popolated though...

Why?  You can run all of that on a CISC chip if you have a real time OS and manage latency.

I really doubt it has what you think of as a DSP.  It might have some custom gate arrays.  The data is already bitstreamed in the AD section.

I am sure the internal bus framing is remarkably similar to AES50 making the external interfacing an electrical only issue.

IMHO it's the only way they could have designed it and hit the price point.

I think that it would cost more money to re-engineer all that channel processing and fx available on the x32/m32 and maintain compatibility within the series.

Trust me when I say that the x32-rack and x32-core share the same pcb, including two sharc dsps' and one xilinx fpga. Local i/o on the core is handled by the cirrus cs42438 that also handles the line i/o + talkback on the x32-rack.

I know they have the same PCB.

I thought we were talking about an x32 vs m32?  I have not taken my M32 apart and I don't have an M32 core.

If you knew there were two SHARC DSP's why didn't you say so earlier.  I was only trying to say that the Xilinx chip and a CISC uP could do the same thing.

Strictly speaking actual differences between x32 core and m32c core .... Ive read they're the same but I want to see it in real life .... Was hoping someone here had one that they could open up and take some pics to compare to mine .... This way we can put it to bed once and for all ....

I really don't want to take apart the m32.  If I had a core I would but I know the screw heads would get scratched.  Sorry

I have an M32C.  I might be able to pop the top before I leave for NAMM.  I will post pics of I can.
