Who loves their cable jacket stripper?
« on: October 27, 2016, 12:45:15 PM »

I want to get a stripper that makes a nice, controlled depth, circumferential slit on SOOW, larger sizes of THHN, etc. There are many styles and brands. Which ones do you like? Thanks.

Best,

How much do you want to spend/how often do you use it?  There are commercial strippers from Eubanks and others that are used in factories.  I've used things with rotary drums and several blades to cut multiple layers of coax so you just pull them off.  Also fixed die machines using pneumatics to cut and pull off the insulation.

I just use a single edge razor blade.  Bend the cable away from where you're cutting and as you cut part way into the jacket the rest of it will part without nicking the internal wires.

How much do you want to spend

Yes, as always, I should have been more specific. I'm looking for a hand-held stripper that can be carried in a tool box. There appear to be many in the $30 range, and I might spend a little more for one that is truly awesome. I, too, have used more manual means for the last 40+ years, but the need seems to come up often enough that I'd like to add one to my kit. -F

For that larger cable, I haven't found one. For smaller diameter cable (about 3/8" or less), this tool is the best. (The same tool is rebranded by many different manufacturers; generically it's called "Cyclops.")

If there was something similar for larger cable, I'd like to get one, myself.

Technically not "mine", but I had one similar to this that I really liked.

Goes up to 750 MCM after that your on your own.  Seriously though, makes the cut around the cable, then blade turns 90 deg and will slice out to the end.  I was doing mostly THHN so just got in the habit of a razor knife-but this tool is much safer, easier and quicker.

Main downside is make sure you can geet and keep replacement blades on hand.  The one I had was private branded and couldn't find blades for it when I broke the last one.

I just use a sharp belt knife. Bend and saw gently.

All I saw was "Who loves their stripper?"
I've been attracted to a few, two once at the same party (in southern CA), but the relationship never blossomed to love. Always remained transactional with $1 bills the medium of communication.

Thank you all for your replies, even you Tim and JR ;) (And I confess that my title wasn't completely innocent.)

I think I'll be getting one like Stephen had and appreciate the heads up on it eating blades.

I'll also try a Cyclops for mic cables and the like -- it's a modest investment. Thank you Jonathan.

Best,
