Danley SH95 over TH118?
« on: August 01, 2016, 12:21:46 pm »

Would a single pair of SH95's be heard over a single pair of TH118s sufficiently?

That is a really "open ended" question.

Are you talking about system balance?

If so, what type of music, what sort of space-inside/outside etc.

And why the choice of the SH95?  Just curious.  There may be better options

Is that the same as a single over a single?

Yes, single over single.

SH95 because I see a great deal on a powered pair.

Spaces will vary - semi-mobile setup for live avant garde, electronic, DJ, and band applications...

That's not a particularly loud box.  It will work fine for all kinds of music...up to a certain size room.  How big is your room?

If you do look seriously at these, make sure they come with pole sockets.  Sticking this on top of the TH118 isn't going to be a good deployment.

How loud do you want it? The fact that you're looking at TH118 implies that you want some serious output. I would look at the SM80 to go over TH118's especially for portable situations.

If the SH95 is 'loud enough' then you could probably go with a smaller sub. I believe a member was selling a pair of TH112's for a really good deal not too long ago

It seems the standard set up is two TH118s to an SM80.  The issue here is the mid bass gap.  If you bump up the eq on the SH95 to get down to 150Hz or so, when you max out there you are giving up output in the speakers normal operating range.  Which is roughly equivalent to the SM80 above 350.  If you run the crossover to the TH118 higher to compensate you now have a physical alignment issue as you'll want them close together as well as aligned in the DSP.  I still think you'd get uneven response in the midbass from the different patterns although the SH95 may not maintain pattern control pushed that low.
For bass heavy music within the rig's volume constraints it might work but there are probably better options.

Danley's description is "a great downfill or under balcony speaker". That would cross that box off my list as a main speaker.
SM80 seems a much better choice and it's 8 db louder.

SH95's sound great, but don't have much output.  I'd pass and look for something louder.

There is a saying  "The wrong piece of gear at a great price is still the wrong piece of gear"

Don't just buy something because you get a great deal.

The SH95 is a great box, but I would not suggest it based on what you say your intended usage is.
