Shure mic comparison
« on: March 30, 2011, 07:56:30 AM »

I have a couple of Shure KSM 109 mics which I see have been discontinued.  I happen to notice that the newer SM 137 looks a lot like the KSM 109 except for the color.  I checked the specs and have found they are exactly the same for both mics.  Is the KSM 109 a SM137 with a paint job?
Could either be an acceptable substitude for a SM 81?

Some of the KSM line has gotten phased out in recent years. For example the KSM27 is now replaced by the SM27. I think it even says it is a replacement on their site. (I have a new SM27 and it sounds great.)

While I am not completely sure, they could have made minor upgrades to the 109 and then re-numbered it. However, if they changed the capsule, it may sound entirely different. Even capsules with similar physical specs and properties can sound different from one another.

Perhaps an A/B test would answer your question better. You can always take yours to a store and ask to compare them.
