Leaving LED Pars on all night?
« on: June 28, 2016, 07:46:25 PM »

Is there a problem leaving LED par cans on all night?  I have a situation where lighting an outdoor stage overnight would be beneficial from a security standpoint.  The par cans will be ideally situated to light the whole stage.  They would probably be on half the morning as well until I arrive for the next day's events.

Shouldn't be a problem....assuming they're IP rated for outdoors and you don't care about the potential for rain

They are IP65 or something close to that.  They do have black metal housings and will be exposed to the sun all morning while they are on.  I was thinking maybe they would get too hot?

I think it will be fine.

One thing to remember with heat sinks is they work both ways so if the light isn't on a great amount of heat may be conducted back into the fixture anyway

And if it makes you feel better, run them a little below max.

Well, we have LED street lighting.  They keep that on all night!

Steve.

There is a funny story about the first generation of those....  They tested them in a desert thinking the heat would be a good testing ground.  There were no birds to speak of out there so when they got out in a real city, the heat sinks filled up with bird poop and the units failed.

That said, yes leave the lights on all night
