Martin Mania SCX500 Problem
« on: March 27, 2011, 06:56:55 PM »

I have 2 SCX500's that are having problems.

On one fixture, everything works but the lamp. I replaced the dummy load board as it was fried, and the problem was still there. I also tried replacing the thermoswitch. This one when powered on, makes a buzzing noise.

The second fixture will not pan or tilt. I tried switching the motors from another known working SCX500 thinking it was them, but still nothing. The pan motor seems to have no power, while the tilt tries to hold one position, both with lightjockey and on stand alone.

Any ideas?

I'm in the US.

The one that wouldn't pan or tilt had a bad main PCB, I replaced it and it's working, so I just need to figure out the one with the lamp problem.

Yes, I tried 3 different known good lamps. We have 10, 6 we bought in 2004, 4 in 2008. The 6 from '04 have all had problems of various degrees, the ones from '08 have not. These are in a permanent install.

Have you opened a 04 unit to see if there the same inside as an 06 unit ? You might find it your problem jumps out at you :)

The 04 models are different on the inside than the 08 models.

First unit, check the transformer output.
Second, sounds like the stepper motor driver IC chip, usually in a PCB mounted socket.

I replaced some more components on the Dummy Load PCB, and now the lamp works.

As for the IC chip, is it the 18 pin IC on the bottom right of the picture or the surface mounted one in the middle?

The 18 pin ones look just like motor drivers, one for each stepper..

The ones on our old Roboscan 1220s used to die a lot.

Have a look here .. http://www.componentkits.com/dslibrary/EDE1200.pdf

The IC in the bottom right did appear to be burned upon further inspection. I just ordered a new one. Thanks!
