Here are some pics of the sound baffles in a dual basketball court I was working in last week.
The sound of the room, before we added drape, was quite good but as you can see, there is much more to it than a few hanging panels of soft stuff.
These were about 12" thick and covered the whole ceiling save for the gaps seen for lights and HVAC.
The NHL rink in the same facility was equally well treated to allow for a very decent sounding space.
If you really want to get a reverberant athletic space suitable for audio, it takes real money and a desire on the part of the designers.
