Building a box is easy but the channels that lock the lids in place can't be duplicated in wood very effectively...
Not only that, but depending on your shop and what tooling you have available, building the lids/covers so that they're interchangeable and can fit in any orientation can be tricky.

The is a company: Do It Yourself Road Cases
They sell a DVD that walks you through how to do it.
I bought the video....watched it....and decided I could find rack cases for cheap money on Craigs List that would likely cost less and save me a headache.

Use a router to make the cutouts for the latches. There are rental companies that rent routers. You can buy a pop riveter and rivits at HD and Lowes. There are rental companies that rent pop riviters. Reliable Hardware in North Hollywood California sells latches and hardware and they ship.
