Soundcraft UI16 Buzz
« on: April 12, 2016, 10:10:31 AM »

So I received my new UI16 late last week. I hooked it up Sunday and every output creates a buzz in my system. I don't even have to power the unit on, just connect the XLR's. It creates the same loud buzz from the mains and all the Aux sends.
FYI. Everything runs through a Furman conditioner. I have a Soundcraft GB2R hooked to a Drive Rack hooked to a Crown amp. Their is NO buzz until I take the outputs off the GB2R and move them to the UI16.

Has anyone else experienced this. Getting ready to send it back.

No, I haven't.

But, have you tried different XLR cables (ones with the ground lifted...or vice versa) between the Ui16 and DriveRack?

What happens when you do power the unit on?

Buzz is consistent regardless of the power state.

I have rung out equipment in this garage for 5 years with not ground issues.

Eliminate the possibilities.  1. Bad/miswired cables.  Check them. Replace them.  2. Noisy power conditioner. Eliminate the Furman.

If you are in the same rack as the other gear, you can try isolating ground, but certainly should not have to. That combination of gear should work fine.  option 1 and 2 are the most common source of problems that I've run into.

Buzz is consistent regardless of the power state.

Does that include disconnecting the AC power cable completely?

With the UI16 out of the loop, there is no noise. In addition to the board, DRPA, amp and Furman, The rack also contains other pieces (two T. C. Helicon units, 32 band EQ, etc.) that have no noise. When the same XLR cords are disconnected from the rack and plugged to the unit the buzz hit the speakers. Unplugging the unit make the noise stop. It buzzes regardless of it being turned on.

So ground loop? but why?

Is the shielding connected to Pin 1 AND the ground/barrel of the XLR?  If so, remove the ground or try a cable that isn't wired that way.  Then, report back.

The ground was the trick. Thanks for the insight. It was as simple as depressing the ground lift bottom on the DRPA+ that  the unit was connected to. I have some full testing to do but the buzz went away. I need to get the Aux sends hooked up also without buzz but I know what to look at. I am still not sure out of 12 pieces of equipment hooked up and on, it is the only one that generates the buzz.
