A VNA for the rest of us?
« on: March 27, 2016, 12:02:50 AM »

This may be a question without an answer, but I was wondering if anyone has a (relatively) inexpensive stand-in for a proper VNA? Basically, is there some combination of off-the-shelf bits (and, I'm assuming, software) that will approximate the measurement capabilities of a VNA, even just at wireless microphone frequencies?

Thanks!

Inexpensive is all relative.  About USD$500 is the starting point for these devices.

There just isn't the demand to push prices lower.  Usb CRO's have got cheap, but CRO's probably outsell VNA's by 500:1.

This product was mentioned by Jason Glass a while back to test/tune antennas.

I have added an external coax relay to mine so that forward (S21,S11) and reverse (S12,S22) measurements can be made without reversing the device under test.
