We are being advised to purchase a 12k lumen projector for a 50 ft throw distance.  Our multipurpose room is 45'0"w x 65'0"l x 15'0"h.  We will be using a 16'0"w motorized screen.  Besides best brand, now the option of a projector with lamp illumination vs. laser illumination has been presented to us.  Basic differences pointed out are initial cost vs. long term lamp replacement and maintenance costs(how about image quality?).  Any information from your experience is greatly appreciated.  No specific projector manufacturer has been mentioned yet.

FWIW, throw distance only matters for the lens.  The brightness requirement depends on the size of the projected area - screen size, not the distance between projector and screen, as you can compensate for throw distance with different lenses. 

I don't have any specific experience with laser projectors, but 12K sounds about right for a lights-on-capable 9'x16' screen.

I'm a big fan of biting the bullet up front and enjoying the long-term investment that comes with it.

If your research proves that it's a worthwhile thing to invest in from a maintenance, EoL, budget standpoint, go for laser.

I don't really know anything about laser projectors, but getting rid of the bulb would be awesome.  Most bulbs will dim over time, so even if it hasn't failed, you can get poor performance from a bulb. Having an even light source that didn't dim or fail over time sounds like a great choice (if the real life performance lives up to the hype).

How often is this going to be used?  You can get a variety of 10K lumen conventional projectors for $8,000 - $15,000.  $45K is a big price jump for an extra 1000 lumens.  On the other hand, this is right where the big price jump hits - lots of 12K lumen projectors are in the $40K+ price range.

I agree, that's a lot of projector for a multi purpose room. Have your DPI Rep bring out the eVision 8500 laser projector, on a 9x16 it should look good, much nicer price point

We use this exact projector at the cinema in our student union. It works well, and looks great. Color reproduction is excellent, much better than the lamp-based projectors I am used to using. Be aware that this is a big projector, it is quite heavy, and it is fairly loud. Depending on where you put it, these may be issues for you.

We paid considerably less than $45k for ours. Panasonic has (and Epson will soon have) laser projectors in the same brightness range that will likely be less expensive. One nice feature is that these projectors have much more variable light output than a standard lamped projector. You can adjust the output down to something like 40% for use in low-light situations, and dial it back up if you need the full output.

For us, the extra cost was worth paying up front.
