Whilst I have heard of this being done in a live context - hello Alex Van Halen - I have to wonder if it wouldn't be more musical to augment a kick drum with a carefully chosen kick drum sample...either from the drummer's own kit recorded in isolation, or from one of the many available libraries.

Of course, oohing will be better than a great drummer playing a well-tuned kit...

Cheers,
Tim

Don't think it will need to be tuned any more than a person would need to tune a bass drum for each song. I have the bass drum and tone both on the same gate so its not like its on all the time. Just a pulse when the bass drum gate is open. With the correct attack, hold, release, time and level it is hard to make out in my daw other than a thicker sound.

I have a band in two weeks that has the right style music to try this.  Easy to try or discard.  Who knows it may be worth.
I'll report back then.

Douglas R. Allen

I did this often in the 80s.  It was just a quick way to get a big bass drum in a time when most everything was less sophisticated.

I used a little home made sine wave generator and two channels with gates. Placed a mic in front of whatever marginal drum was in use that gig to get the main sound from it, plus use that signal to key the sine wave.  Set the frequency and duration to compliment the mix and room without blowing up the bass bins.  All good fun.

Back then I doubt anyone but sound or band folks new it was being done. Today more people might be aware of something.

I used a little home made sign wave generator and two channels with gates. Placed a mic in front of whatever marginal drum was in use that gig to get the main sound from it, plus use that signal to key the sign wave.  Set the frequency and duration to compliment the mix and room without blowing up the bass bins.  All good fun.

yup i hate "sign" waves....   ;D

Yeah, but well tuned, well mic'd drum kits are the exception rather than the rule.  Whereas live drum replacement is, well, not that hard...  A great drummer, well, no comment!

To you maybe, but it seems a lot of drummers have no clue.

Since the kick drum mainly operates in fundamental vibration mode, where the pitch is is defined by the average tension of all the lugs, matching them to each other brings little/no benefit. As long as the heads are healthy and the average tension is reasonable, it will work serviceably well....

Tuning the rest of the kit is a different matter, and off topic for this thread.

Yeah, that needs a +1.  And probably a +2, and a +3...
