Replacing PA Mains with Peavey SSE 12 Speakers
« on: March 05, 2016, 11:54:29 PM »

Hi,

My Pastor is wanting to replace our old EAW FR129z speakers (painted white) with white Peavey SSE 12 Sanctuary Series 12" speakers. What are your opinions? Is are these speakers comparable? If not, what would you all recommend (speakers must be white)?

Thanks!

Armando,
Before we compare speakers, perhaps a good exercise is to examine the audio needs of the church.
An upgrade opportunity typically is something that doesn't happen too often, better do it right = do it once.

How is the room? What is the system used for? Any known problems?

Why does he want to replace them with something "comparable"

He needs to spend some money?

The MUST be a reason he wants to replace the current speakers.

If you replace them with something that is similar-what is the point?

The FIRST question I would ask is WHY does he want to replace them.

Then look at a solution for THAT-without regard to whether the speakers are comparable or not.

Of course there is no way to offer any sort of suggestions-because we know NOTHING about your room-other than what speakers are currently in there.

We don't know where they are placed-the size of the room-the style of worship etc.

There is NO WAY ANYBODY can offer any sort of suggestion until those and other questions are properly answered.

Sorry-but that is the reality.

Craziness. They are essentially the same kind of speaker, but about 12 steps down the quality ladder.

I want to change my brown volvo for a tan honda. Should I do it?

Bullwinkle: This is the amplifier, which amplifies the sound. This is the Preamplifier which, of course, amplifies the pree's.

Tim,

I'm new to sound, which is why I'm reaching out to you all here. Can you give me your advice without your sarcasm?

I would ask again-WHY is he wanting to change?

And if they were the same-why change for the same thing?

The color doesn't matter.  What you are interested in is coverage-response-SPL etc.

We need to know YOUR needs and problems FIRST.

Hi Ivan,

The reason my Pastor wants to upgrade/replace the main speakers is they are sounding more and more muffled after 10 years of use.

I didn't mean to sound vague. I don't know very much about speakers and didn't know which follow up questions to ask my Pastor or what to ask here.

Here's some background information about the building:
  • It sits about 200 people
  • The building is 75 x 50

Also, the speakers are mounted to the side of walls. I have attached a photo that shows the placement of the speakers.

Thanks again for your feedback!

Hi Lindsay,

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to try what you suggested and will report my findings.

The drivers are readily available for the high end  .
you can replace the entire hi end driver  heres a link
.http://www.fullcompass.com/prod/072392-EAW-Eastern-Acoustic-Wrks-803047?utm_source=googleps&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=googleps&gclid=COHWvLmhr8sCFQgoaQodc2AI7Q
not rocket science to replace .
Or send them off to have the diaphragm replaced.

you do need to determine what might have blown them.
if that is indeed the issue
