Unless you are one of the special people who can hear things others cant-then measurement (and knowing what it tells you) is a much faster and more accurate way of tuning.

Listening is fine for overall balance etc, but the "tuning" needs to be more accurate.

Nitefly is a great album-but is a prime example (in my opinion) that the studio it was done in had the subs run to high.

The album sounds a bit "thin", so I end up boosting the low end when listening.

But maybe that is me, and my reference is a bit "skewed".

I use a Tascam CD500b player with whichever CD makes sense.
It has XLR analog and AES/EBU digital outs.
I've run both directly into my Performer and compared the sound quality of each throughput.
The digital AES is noticeably superior; same player, same CD, just A/B-ing between the flat channels.
No D/A conversion from CD until the stagebox.

Conclusion; the playback device and the material are both important to detail.

This might seem weird but I have had great luck with the demo songs out of an old Rolland TD8 drum brain.  I adjust the subs level and eq a bit for the room and I end up pretty close.

I use several of Dannys songs (including that one) for power testing on HF-REAL abusive-but doesn't sound like it.  Until you measure the actual power.

I used to work with him up in DC a couple of decades ago. He was a great player.

I think the reason this became so prevalent was that it was very dry and everything was very clear sounding.  It makes many systems sound impressively clear.  For a reference check, I don't want to fool anything, I want to stress it with something that will sound nasty if things are off.  Or really skewed.

When I first got into audiophilia the measure was pure acoustic music.  Symphonic, small acoustic jazz combo.  I still use a Telarc CD or a Borodin string quartet to check stereos.  If you can get cello right, with fullness but not woofy, easily distinguish the viola from the violins, get the imaging and sense of space on this, then you have to have done a number of things right.
