15'' or 18'' Box design suggestion
« on: January 21, 2016, 08:08:52 AM »

Hi,
there are many existing great subwoofer boxes, but they are large (keystone, a lot of 2x18'' plans, and so on), they are too large for me. I am looking for (1/2 2x18'' size) box, which are characterized by high pressure and high output power.  For 15'' or 18'' speaker, outdoor aplications, Hip-Hop music style. Any box plan suggestions?

which drivers?

It depends upon what kind box model you offer. because a certain box have certain speaker.

Cubo sub... https://www.freespeakerplans.com/plans/14-plans/basscab/6-cubo-sub
Looked at some pics of the Cubo 15 and it has some similarities to the Tapped Horn subs.
Anyway, you want deep bass, outdoors in a small cabinet for hip hop content? Riiiiiight... ::)

Actually, very few users get to design the driver. Most everyone uses an off the shelf driver and then designs the box to work with the driver to achieve the desired performance.

I guess if you have the resources you can design the box independent of the driver, then get a driver manufactured that works with the box to achieve the desired performance.

(See what I did there? Do you notice the important part of both statements? Something you have not told us yet...)

FaitalPro 18" 18XL1600 is flat to 40hz in a ported box with 8.31 internal cubic feet. 1600 watts AES, 3200 watts peak.

Ciare 15" 15NDH-4S is flat to 40hz in a ported box with 5.391 internal cubic feet. 1000 watts AES, 2000 watts peak.

I have both woofers and use the 18" for live because it will play louder and has stronger bass with more energy than the 15".  Both of those woofers are awsome.

The Faital 18 is larger, so even if the two drivers had the identical excursion capacity, would move more air(albeit requiring a larger cabinet design).

Since it is a wee bit more efficient, and has a wee bit more excursion capacity, I'd easily go with a design using the Faital.  I don't consider the cabinet size difference to be a big issue for me.

Best regards,

John
