DAW does not see Soundcraft Si Expression signal
« on: November 12, 2015, 11:54:11 AM »

I have just updated the Soundcraft software to 1.7 and installed a USB/MADI card.
I set the Soundcraft's direct outs to the card as described in the manual.
I have a fast and capable new laptop with Waves Tracks Live and an older Cubase DAW.
I installed the Soundcraft drivers onto the laptop.
I booted the mixer, connected the USB cable to the laptop and booted the PC.

In Tracks live I set the preferences to the Soundcraft mixer. Sorry if the terminology is not exact as I am away from the equipment. I do not know if the DAW actually detects the mixer or is simply responding to the available driver, thus the Soundcraft option is available for selection.

With Tracks Live I set up a session with stereo out.

I arm Channel 1 for recording and speak into a mic connected to Ch 1 on the mixer. I see the mixer respond to my voice. The meter on the DAW does not respond however. I recorded several times, repeating the process and see no waveforms in the timeline.

I tried the same with the Cubase DAW. Initially it was picking up audio through the laptops internal mic. I was able to record a track of me taping on the laptop. I went into the setup and selected the Soundcraft. tried again. No input signal.

I am sure I must be missing a step. Is there an obvious selection that I have failed to make? I just realized I did not try a different USB cable. But is the fact that the DAWs list the Soundcraft confirmation that the USB cable works?

I have recorded narration tracks with an analog A&H mixer via usb to laptop, using Audacity. That is the limit to my experience of recording.

Thanks,
Jim

Double check your output routing first.
As a test, set the second output routing from the LR channel to the USB outs and see if that passes signal.

I did some reading of the card manual and a post related to it here on the forum. I THINK it may be the dip switch setting on the card. I am not using the MADI at all. No stage box. If I understand correctly the first 32 channels go to MADI and the next 32 go to USB. I am thinking that is the reason the DAW does not see any input from channels 1-24 since they are assigned to MADI. I can switch the card to send the first 32 channels to USB by changing the dip switches.

Is my thinking correct?

I think that was the change I made as well when first installing the card. It seems more logical in many ways. I can check later today.

Thanks! It was your post that got me thinking about the dip switches.

But you can easily assign 1-24 to the higher usb channels without changing switches.
Probably faster that taking the card out and flipping dips.

I pulled the card, tried some other dip settings. Did not work. Returned the dips to factory settings and boom! Worked perfectly.

Doncha just love dealing with computers...
Bet one of the dip's wasn't fully "set", and you working the switches fixed it.

I've been struggling with a recording computer I put together, which works fine recording from my Performer to pro tools 9.
I couldn't get it to work with Tracks Live.
I finally gave up and called Waves tech support only to find they don't support AMD processors!

I wanted to reply to this topic because I figured out the problem on my end - Soundcraft Impact and Madi USB (also so I remember I know how to do it next time I search)... the fix for me was to select Fader 1 and send Direct Out to O/I Madi channel 33 (and then go up from there 34 for Fader 2 ,35 for fader 3 ,36 for Fader 4 etc)

That's what I have done to record to Tracks Live from my Expression 3
