I just came from a demonstration tonight by the TN Highway Patrol where they detailed their crash investigation technology... essentially they have a Leica scanner on a tripod that will scan a room or outdoors with a laser in 360 on both planes.

The resolution is 1/2 cm at 335 ft!!!
 


There was a live demo that took place.


The potential for this technology in a live audio application is limitless. Imagine tying it directly into MAPP!  Walking into a venue, doing a quick scan of the the room in 360 degrees, and then telling the software how it should calculate the reflectivity of each surface it finds.


Is anyone working on this sort of technology application?

We thought about doing this on the install side, to speed up creating a room model.  The cost is still much too high, for us at least, and it would take longer to convert from a 3D cloud to CAD to model to provide any benefit.

I've often thought this would be great, but the clever bit in our world is getting the 3D data cloud and turning into cad surfaces, and then being able to easily define listening planes on that model.

I can already take measurements with an rangefinder w/ inclinometer on a tripod the 10-30 data points I need to build a pretty accurate set of planes for calculations pretty easily. For me to move to something like this, I'd need it to be substantially quicker and offer some other advantages

I used the prototype for this http://www.faro.com/products/3d-surveying/laser-scanner-faro-focus-3d/overview about 5 years ago to survey a room.  One scan didn't take too long, but with balcony, pillars, curtains, railings, chairs etc. it took many scans, 34 to be exact to get all of the room and then we had to get into the software and knit all the scans together.  The potential was great, the investment in time was way to long to be practical.    5 Years later with more powerful computers and lessons learned, I think it would be improved, but there are still very few venues where you can actually see everything from one spot, so multiple scans might be necessary.
 I think drone technology may be the future answer to this,  as in this research being done at Penn.

I immediately thought of this too.
I have visions of future tours opening up the back of the truck and "release the drones!" lol

Part of the problem, aside from the cost of the devices, is that their output will be far too detailed for any of the current modeling software. For instance, if you are using EASE for acoustics you will get inaccurate results if you try to model every little detail.

My guess is that we will end up with some smoothing algorithms.  Also consider combining the laser scans with some acoustic scans.
