I'm looking for an improvement on the Shure windscreens for the MX412 style mics.  I've got more than sixty in stock  and a few seem to have acquired a much nicer, elongated windscreen with almost twice the foam in front of the capsule as compared to the Shure stock windscreens.  Trouble is I don't know where the better windscreens came from.  I'm looking at the Windtech 1400s http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/298943-REG/WindTech_1412B_1400_Series_Replacement_Windscreen.html as a possible candidate.  What are you using for your small capsule mics?

On the MX gooseneck mics we use the stock windscreen.

But for dedicated lectern mics instead of bulk conference mics we use the Shure A99WS, which is a ball-shaped windscreen that fits onto that kind of mic nicely.

You mean like this:
WindTech 1400

Take the spaces out of this text string:

Start with the Left Bracket: [
Then put in the start url message: url=
Then you put in the actual URL
Next is the Right Bracket: ]
Insert the text you want to display
Another Left Bracket: [
End url message: /url
And finally the last Right Bracket: ]

What I usually do is type the text I want to display, in this case: WindTech 1400
Highlight the text with your mouse, then click the "Insert Hyperlink" button.
This will give you (spaces added to keep it from showing as BBCode) [ url ]WindTech 1400[ /url ]
Then insert "=web-link" after the first tag to get something like this (again, spaces added to break the BBCode):
[ url=http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/298943-REG/WindTech_1412B_1400_Series_Replacement_Windscreen.html ]WindTech 1400[ /url ]
So now that shows up thusly:
WindTech 1400

This isn't elongated, but it is from shure so it should fit right.

There's also this one that locks on with a set screw

a bit more expensive but a different look.

Also, the windscreen's effectiveness is reduced if it is pushed all the way on. ideally it should be backed off a bit to leave a gap between it and the capsule

That looks like a good one! Must get one to try.
If you look at the big budget awards shows, they seem to have much larger windscreens than we usually have on our corporate lecterns.
I wonder if they have figured out something....

Is there a chance that your mics ended up with the wireless windscreens?  They both have the plastic frame that allows them to snap on but the wireless one has significantly less foam and is therefore shorter.  They also work poorly on desk mics where the mic is much more likely to get direct plosives as compared to a tie mic.

I have not done objective studies but I think the EV Polar Choice windscreens (with the cross holes in them) as well as the Audio Technica windscreens (with the recessed "ring" around the foam just above the capsule) seem to work better at killing plosives than the regular Shure windscreens.   The stock screen is usually ok but every once in a while I get a doctor who really knows how to bottom out the diaphragm.

Also, I just emailed with Shure a few weeks ago about part of this topic and, as Jason mentioned, the windscreen's effectiveness is better if it's pushed on to the first click which leaves some air between the foam and the capsule.  Interestingly, it apparently doesn't compromise response or polar pattern to push it all the way down.  I find these screens pushed all the way down very often and fixing them has become one of my neurosis (like when I don't step on cracks in the sidewalk;).

The ones I found and picked up for Sennheiser and Shure gooseneck mics were packaged by Audio Technica. It's quite a bit larger than the stock from either but sounds similar to what you describe.

AT8102 is the model I think.

We use an Audio Technica windscreen. It fits perfectly, looks good and is a big improvement over the Shure.
