I'd rather have a customer in need of them...

Or maybe I should hire the salesman that sold them?

Yeah, but keep a close eye on them!

700 volts isn't exactly useful as-is...
They could be used to power a big stack of valve (tube) power amplifiers directly.

20MW would drive a serious stack of subwoofers...

OOPS

WSF intended to replace the existing DC generators with higher voltage DC generators to  save fuel and reduce maintenance costs.
in 2006 WSF purchased nine  generators for  $5.3 million total.
However, WSF subsequently discovered that the control system on the vessels would not support the higher voltage generators.

Someone got promoted.

(I live in Washington)

This would explain why the formerly option $5.00 "Sub-Agent Fee" for renewing a license plate was changed to "$5.00 Sub-Agent Fee, or Funds Ferry Replacement if renewed at County DOL"

Used to be able to avoid that fee by renewing with the county; now you pay that $5 regardless. I prefer that $5 goes to a local sub-agent, and support their business, as opposed to buying a new boat, but it's fishy that they suddenly found a way to permanently increase my expense by $5 per vehicle. (And I have two POVs, the box truck, a small trailer, and the WhisperWatt, so that's 5 vehicles a year!)

It is interesting that in 2003 there were 5.3 million private vehicles registered in Washington state-in theory should only take $1 for 1 year to fix the oops.

Actually, 700 VDC is really close to the bus voltage on a 480 volt inverter, so a nice size inverter and a transformer and you could have power to run a good size gig.  The DC bus should make it really easy to parallel them for more power if necessary.  Though the feeder for a 19,000 amp 120 volt circuit could be a pain to handle.

What's interesting is that five of the nine generators are warehoused in Longview, which is a hundred-some miles from the ferry yard in Seattle on the Puget Sound where the entire ferry fleet operates.

I wonder if they were brought in on a ship via the Port of Longview, and the mistake was discovered before those five could be delivered to Seattle, so rather than pay to move them they decided warehouse them. Delivering and storing them at their own Seattle yard probably would have been cheaper than renting warehouse space for nine years.

How much would one of these things weigh?

I looked them up just for fun, 26,312 pounds. They are about 7 feet in diameter.

That's a damn lot of copper and steel!
