Freq Out
« on: July 16, 2015, 02:31:30 pm »

I suspect a lot of those are just how it turned out rather than what it was designed to be.  I doubt that anyone would start to design and build a generator with 41 2/3 c/s in mind (it wasn't Hz then!).

Possibly, it was decided by the same person who thought the gauge of our railways should be 4' 8 1/2".

I remember reading that Laurens Hammond lobbied around the US quite extensively to standardize on 60Hz so that the synchronous motors he used in clocks and organs would work anywhere in the country.  Making and converting the organs for different line frequencies was a major burden when they were first developed and different municipalities were using different standards.

How about 41 2/3 cps x 60 = 2500 cycles per minute.

Seems like a logical number.

Please make me STOP.  :o

41-2/3 and 45-1/3 Hz.

Don't forget 33+1/3 RPM.
