Sb1000 driver choices
« on: June 23, 2015, 07:04:57 AM »

Does anyone one who has experience with both the e and the z series of the sb1000s feel the z is an significant improvement over the e?  I have several pair of es which are loaded with the original RCF l18p300 drivers which due to age need to be re-coned or replaced.  Since the cabinets are the same, only the drivers are different, I am wondering if it might be worth it to change over to either the 18-sound 18lw1400 or the B&C 18tbx100 that was used in the z series.

thanks
Doug

I have some 18LW1400s in other cabinets.  I love them but my understanding is that they were just a supplier change for EAW, not really a major upgrade.  That said there is an 18LW2400 which is an upgrade with essentially double the power capacity that may be worth looking into.

Doug,

The L18P300 Xmax is 7.8mm, while the B&C 18tbx100 is 9mm with a Xvar of 11mm. The B&C 18tbx100 has a heavier cone and a bit more Bl (magnetic force) so given more power, it should have a bit more (1.5-2 dB) output and may be a bit more "punchy", especially if your old cones have become "tenderized".
