What subs were the sm80 paired with? I have tried running them with 728's and HP 700's  and it sounded good.  Paired with the TH 118 and the tunings I use it sounds better than any system I have ever run. Anyone in the North East that has an interest in hearing the system I will be doing many outdoor events in and around the Jay Peak area. Mostly small outdoor festivals ranging between 500- 2000 people.

The subs were TH118's.   Unfortunately they were a little underwhelming as well. The known comparison was a 728's.  While the 118's were flatter, they was noticeably less impact then the BR of the 728. This seems to be my common experience with tapped horns.   I really like the Danley DBH-218, and this may be why?  I hope to be turning on a decent sized stack of BC-218's in a week or two...

For my simple comparison I used one amplifier, played some noise in the 118 (will the other sub was shorted) took a measurement, then moved the cable directly to the 728 (and moved the shorting NL4), and took another measurement.  Therefor, the only reference is the other speaker.   HP @ 20Hz, LP @ 80Hz.

118 is in blue - 728 is in green, measurements outdoors.  House 50ft away, line of trees 75ft away.

That 60Hz hump is the nature of the driver.  If you model it in anything you can't get away from it.  And the reason I took my LW1400s out of the ported cabs they were in and built Cubo18s which create a similar response out of a nominally flatter driver than the JBL.  Kick drum impact that feels like bass.  It may not be technically correct but it sells.  Both for the box manufacturers and providers who give clients what they perceive as more punch.

 I have to admit that tuning  this system took some time but  pound for pound  it beats any SRX/VRX/ KF 650 / SLS 920/960setup in output and sound quality. I have used them all and the Danley is now my A rig.

I wish Danley made a version of this with a narrower or asymmetric vertical.  There really isn't much use in SOS situations for 80 degrees in the vertical.  Although I recognize that coupling to the conical horn was the cleanest implementation.  Maybe some day they'll come out with a 134dB, 65lb asymmetric 90x50 SOS box that fits in a car.  And Nick and everyone else in this same boat (like me) will be done.

The problem is that people just "think" they are getting something that they are not.

The reason for the conical pattern is to avoid pattern flip.

A 50* vertical pattern SHOULD be physically larger than the 90* horizontal-by almost twice as much.

What happens is that the cabinet loses pattern  control in the vertical at a fairly high freq-so the pattern they "think they are getting" is actually OPPOSITE the stated pattern.

But as long as they "believe", then they will be fooled by the "simple numbers".

I dunno, we did an outdoor show with a band last Thursday that does about 100 dates a year locally.  One SM80 over one TH118 a side.  2 or 3 compliments from long time fans saying it was the best sound they'd ever heard from the band.  I'm sure the sound could have been better but critical ears told us we were doing "something" right.

Where was the mic in relation to the cabinets?  If it is to close-the measurements can become very skewed.

It needs to be a good distance away to get any usable comparison.

Yes it is a "measurement" but is it a "proper measurement"?

I would also argue that not enough smoothing was used-or not enough level, since the low end of the graph "appears" to show output-instead of just sloping down-as both cabinets naturally do.

The mic was about 50feet away. The 118 started sounding pretty rough at louder levels then what we used for measurements. At the end of the day, both measurements were under the same conditions.
