Yes, the currents are huge and, from the little I've read about lightning protection, the rise times fast so the behavior of grounding conductors is governed not just by their resistance but also, perhaps to a greater extent, their inductance.


And this is why grounding electrode conductors should almost never be run in metallic conduit.  They can be run in metallic conduit if proper precautions are taken-usually easier and better to just use pvc if protection is needed.

In the Navy I would occasionally get a transmitter in for repair because it's antenna either was hit or was near a  lightning ground strike.

I remember being amazed at finding the entire RF circuit of a transmitter in perfect condition but parts of the power supply vaporized.  Lightning does what it wants.
