Friends...

I am dealing with feeding audio into one of these:

Canon Vixia HFM50 

Input is (of course) a 1/8" stereo jack, mic level only  After trying a couple of things and finally finding the "manual" setting, I noticed that even though the 'Automatic" (ALS) has been disengaged, there is still something in the "Manual" mode where the camera seems to be "looking for a signal". 

With proper input level from the board and corresponding proper manual camera level set (verified with both pink noise and music program),  if I pull the mains fader down to the bottom, the camera audio gradually starts buzzing, reaching maximum buzz in 3-5 seconds.  I can deal with this OK now that I'm aware of it, but am curious as to what's going on with the camera audio circuitry.

It's dead quiet when the fader hits bottom, then....bzz...zzz...zzz.

Have you tried it running only on battery?

Sounds like "manual" is not really full manual.
It may still have some kind of auto gain working in the background.
Page 119 of the manual indicates you need to push the X to lock the record level once it has been adjusted.

Thanks.  Since I suffered detached retinas a couple of years ago I've been unable to read things unless highly magnified, but driving is OK  It's just reading and any close work which gives me fits.

Locking the manual mode appears not just to keep it in manual, but to set a limiter at whatever input level you've established...a REALLY crappy limiter.  It works better without the limiter...or simply set the limit at -2dBfs.

Got it to work, but I'll never, ever do another camera feed, consumer grade or pro, without bringing camera audio back into my board so I can hear it.  Visual sound metering can be very  misleading...

Usually cmera ops monitor the feed, at least with TV news crews.

Same here, with the exception for the operator of the pro level equipment.

I'm considering purchasing another set of GK Ultraphones as loaners to camera ops.  It seems their use of regular headphones in high SPL situations just doesn't give them the objectivity needed.

But it's just cheaper and easier for me to run a cable back to the board.  I'm the one who has to make the level adjustments to the feed, so cutting out the middle man seems to be the better way.
