Looking at purchasing a Shure ULXD4Q receiver and transmitters. Which band would you buy and why?

(Disclaimer: I'm a Shure Dealer)

I've been telling people to stay away from L50 (632MHz to 698MHz) and maybe J50 (572MHz to 636MHz) since they incorporate the 600MHz frequencies... those are rumored to be given up sooner rather then later. G50 (470MHz to 534MHz) and H50 (534MHz to 598MHz) are probably your best bets right now.

Thanks Ray, I am currently on SLX H5 (518-542)

How much of a difference will I notice going to the ULXD? I will be going Dante right to a QL1.

If you have the analog inputs available I would use them rather than Dante. There is no HA control on the digital inputs because there is no analog HA. You may find the lack of that control, plus the lack of level control in the wireless transmitters a PITA.

Quality wise you should notice a large improvement. ULXD is a much nicer system than SLX.

As far as which band to get. The key is what DTV is in your area. I wouldn't worry too much about the 600MHz band yet, there will probably be frequencies available in that band even if some of it gets auctioned off. When the 600MHz auction takes place there will be a reshuffle of everything below that as TV channels move into the 400-500 band and maybe into VHF.

Click on the channel guide on Pete Erskine's RF Coordination page to get an idea of what frequencies all your local TV channels ore on.

Sound quality wise?

I usually hate it when people go hyperbole and proclaim product A to be "complete crap" and B to be "beyond incredible", but in this case I really do find SLX very poor. I constantly want to grab the EQ on SLX channels to EQ some ugliness out, but it's just not that which is the problem. The ULX-D on the other hand to me sounds like a wire, except that my ULX-D Beta58s and KSM9 have both got around 10 dB LOWER noise floor than their cabled counterparts have both on Yamaha Rio inputs and Riedel Rocknet inputs (both pretty good inputs).

(Yes - the ULX-D was better!)

So SLX vs. ULX-D: Very poor vs. excellent IMO.

Thanks Mac, The Dante feature was the key selling point.

Sounding like a broken record…

but yeah, you are going to see great improvements going to the ULX-D systems. Even the QLX-D is a better sounding rig then the SLX. I've been selling quite a few of both of them and all of my customers been super happy with the quality.

I'm considering transitioning to ULX-D for my 32 channels of radio mics - not least because of the Dante connectivity which I'm currently enjoying very much with the 4 channels I have now, so different strokes for different folks...I wouldn't be without it.

The QLX-D and ULX-D should sound identical.  The ULX adds additional features which may or may not be relevant.

The ULX adds Dante.  Depending on your rig, this may or may not matter at all.
The ULX transmitters have a 20mw power setting option. Helpful in rough RF environments, but not necessary for most.
The ULX has high density mode, which allows more channels in a smaller bandwidth.  Unless you're running a LOT of mics, this doesn't matter much.
The ULX network control can be controlled across subnets.  Important for large installs, but not so much for a single band.

Can you address any of the issues Mac listed with the lack of gain control?
