Analogue mixer for dry rentals
« on: March 27, 2015, 07:04:45 AM »

I've been thinking about picking up a used analogue mixer (16-20 channels, at least 4 auxes) to rent out to those still intimidated by digital.  I'm thinking target client is local bands who need to be able to use it out of the box. What do you guys who are renting gear out think would be good choice if you could only have one analogue mixer in the inventory for such a thing?   Budget max would be $500 used.

Is there still a market for analogue rentals?

Mixwiz, Mackie 1640, small Soundcraft, would be my choices. I might start by looking at the Soundcraft line, as the price reductions have put plenty of very nice small analog Soundcraft boards within the $500 range. What I wouldn't by are any Behringer or Yamaha analog boards in that price range.

Keep in mind that the Mackie 1604 has pre-fader AUX that doesn't mute, so either you deal with no muting or go post-fader (which I don't mind as I feed at unity level.) Other than that, I got my used 1604 for $250 from fleabay in excellent condition aside from my ribbon cable phobia. As others stated, first pick will be a MixWiz.

Are you hauling GEQ, comp/gate, and FX racks also?

I have a mixwiz in pristine condition in a rolling rack with eqs /comps /gates  . I keep the snake all hooked up  in the rolling rack for easy roll in and go setup.  I have been thinking of selling it. let me know.

MixWiz is about as good as it gets for your application.

I kind of figured that would be the consensus. Never hurts to ask though.

I've got a Mackie 1604 listed on eBay. It's a great mixer in great condition, but I've gone all digital.

It is much easier to work with an analogue mixer if you're only get to see the mixer for the first time two hours before the show.

+1, Good advice here. To repeat- A&H, Soundcraft and some Mackie. Avoid the Behringer/Yamaha stuff at this price point.

MixWiz for 16 channels, GL2200/2400 for more channels.  These use individual PCBs, so they are much easier and cheaper to fix than those with single boards (Mackie; Soundcraft?).
