Omni directrional vs. directional (paddle) antennas
« on: March 23, 2015, 02:05:03 PM »

Hi guys,

I have an antenna distribution system for 6 Sennheiser XSW 35 wireless microphones. I need to buy two antennas but I don't know what to get. There are the Omni-directional and directional antennas. I am using the wireless microphones at my church and the main auditorium is not very big.

What is the difference between the two antennas and which one would you guys recommend?

Basically, a directional antenna picks up from the "front" and rejects signal from the rear. An Omni picks up from "all" directions. The simple definition.

Where are your receiver units located? At FOH or on the stage?

The receiver units are located FOH and rack mounted.

Regarding the antennas, are both high-gain?

As long as the microphones don't wander all over, I would do directional antenna then. Mount them up high enough to where there is a clear line of sight between the antenna and transmitters (mics). At least 10ft apart or further.

Which model antenna system did you get?

Haven't bought one yet. I'm looking into these two:

  • Sennheiser A1031U Omnidirectional Antenna
Sennheiser A2003UHF Passive Wideband Directional Antenna

What are the advantages of a directional antenna?

The advantages are the same as using a directional microphone: you pick up little/no RF from behind them, a bit on the sides, and most of it from the front.

I'd stick with passive antennas...less to get you in trouble, and they can do double-duty as receive OR transmit antennas in the future.

Can my Sennheiser EM 10 receivers handle the high-gain coming from directional antennas?

I assume we are talking about the horizontal pattern.   An omni antenna squishes the vertical pattern to obtain the gain.  An antenna that is directional uses some type of collector either a metal feedhorn or in Yagi or log periodic antenna elements tuned to the center freq.  Just like a horn on a speaker directional I am and gain are tightest at the center frequency.

Anyway these reflective elements direct power to the driven element.

Just lime directional speakers directional antennas are great when the transmitters will be in a fixed area.  Also less chance of picking up interference.

Yes, the cable to connect them, assuming moderate cost cable, will drop a few dB.
