I feel your pain Debbie. There's nothing more irritating than a wanna be sound man in the room giving you directions. You know you're doing a great job, but when someone does that it just bugs you for day's.

I almost started a thread here last month on this same topic. I had a soundman in the room, who first was commenting on how cool the Makie DL mixer was (he had used one). My thread was going to read "Other Soundman, STFU"

I was in a club with a bad house system, improperly deployed (flown tops pointed wrong), and there was something up with the sub's. During the first set this guy started treating me like a beginner, telling me how to sweep out the low end with the 31 band EQ. He was one of those "you can fix everything with the EQ" guys. On the first break, I found the subs were out of phase with each other, and by the second song of the next set I had it sounding great. He did at least tell me so, but I was pretty sore of him trying to give me a lesson, as I've been mixing clubs for 30 years.

I never say anything to the FOH mix engineer .... except when it is positive, and then only at the end of the show or on break.  I have had enough people try to explain to me how the mix should be that I know how annoying it is.  This guy should have known better.

I have even had instances where the band playing wanted me to say something to the venue FOH guy because they knew me and didn't like the sound they were getting.  Nope.  Not gonna do it.  Even if everything is so messed up that there exists no chance for a good mix.

As for the difference in taste, everyone has it.  Some like more kick, some like more sibilance on the vocals, etc, etc.

I would have personally thought the guy was pretty darned full of himself to make a manifesto on everything he thought was wrong with the mix. 

Hopefully it didn't bother you so much as to ruin your night

This guy was just a random dude sitting at the end of the bar - about 10 feet - to the side - of the band! First of all he had walked up to the stage and was trying to shout to the bass player over the music whilst he was playing - he just pointed to us.

I have read a few comments on the forums made by some respected folks talking about drums in the mix and what they said has made me very cognizant of not allowing drums to dominate. I really try to pay attention to the drums as I know they can spoil the mix like nothing else if too loud. Last night the kick wasn't loud - it was blended well with everything else. The place was not very well supported - so thinnish crowd and I was very aware of keeping the levels down.
Ironically if he had said the snare - I might have agreed because this drummer had the BEST snare sound and I couldn't help but give it a bit of a 'bump'.

Always keep a channel or 2 routed to nothing for making adjustments when such people are giving you this kind of help.
