Gobo Projector with Minimal hazey edge?
« on: February 23, 2015, 09:17:55 PM »

So I'm looking into getting a gobo projector (Strongly prefer LED) and I'm noticing a lot have hazey edges where the spot light would be (with no gobo). Are there any that can minimize this effect? What is causing this?

The effect is easily noticed in this video

Looking forward to your feedback

Looks like a crappy home made gobo. I have two different Chauvet models. With a professionally made metal or glass gobo and proper focusing they are extremely sharp and look nothing like that.

Here is a vid I found of one of the Chauvet ones I have.

That's odd because even on the product page they've got hazy edges - http://www.chauvetlighting.com/gobo-shot-50w-irc.html

projection on an angle regardless of fixture will do that as optics are designed for projection dead to surface. its kinda get what you get. on more expensive or "better" brands the optics are better, and the soft edges are a little less noticeable. but at the end of the day welcome to lighting.

That's going to happen anytime you pass light through a transparency. The black ink won't completely block the light. However, if you use a metal gobo, then you won't have the circle at all. You'll only get the design. I've even used a transparency glued to a metal gobo to get sharp edges on the design (no circle) and color.

Do you need for it to rotate? I stock the Chauvet LFS-5 and LFS-75DMX framing spots and they project a pretty sharp edged gobo.

An ETC s4 led, with the enhanced definition lens tube does a great job for no hazy edges, with a quality gobo.  That said no solution works when the projection surface is at an angle to the fixture.

Cheap solutions will generally have cheap results.   But degrees of improvement get exponentially more expensive.

That's what you get with cheap transparency gobos. Toner or Inkjet ink just doesn't have the density to block 100% of the light.

Here is a [terrible instagram] photo of a set of custom Rosco Cool Ink projections I did in a ballroom with ETC S4 LED fixtures and 14 degree ED lens tubes.

Done properly, you can get a razor sharp image with absolutely no bleed.

Those gobos are amazing Ray!
In the "old" days the light would have burned those up rather quickly, LED's have really changed the game.

I have found the printing 2 copies then stacking them tends to help the black contrast quite a bit, still not as good as a proper glass gobo, but much better than in the OP's video.
