It would probably be feasible that an audio company could have a tablet maker OEM a "black box" version as a product or brand specific controller.

Yes, and that would still be fantastically expensive.

The custom made product mentioned above would be at least 10x the cost and 2x the size with 1/2 the performance... who wants to buy that when you can just buy a dedicated iPad or an Android device instead?
