Just slightly OT of this forum, but I was just in Jersey City, NJ yesterday teaching a sound class, and saw this overhead power feed for houses near the church. This wasn't an isolated connection, since I saw of bunch of similar taps up and down the street. Seems a bit scary to me, but it must pass local code. In fact, one of the guys in my class used to work for the local POCO and he didn't seem worried about it.

For the right price, it passes local inspection. For a price that is even more right, it doesn't necessarily run through a meter.... 

(My apologies for the stereotypical view of New Jersey and its local governments -- I'm sure there are lots of honest public employees there.  We just don't hear about them in the news out West.)  Mark C.

I did meter the power very carefully at the church before plugging in my seminar AV gear. No problems there, but the receptacles were VERY tired. They were installing new restrooms at the church and had all kinds of wiring and switches hanging out of their boxes. I didn't take any pictures of that because I was worried about being called on the witness stand if someone was electrocuted while I was teaching in the hall. Seriously, that's what I was thinking while taking a leak and staring at the bare wires hanging out of the box. Lucky for me, nobody died while I was teaching my seminar.

Around here the inspectors jurisdiction starts at the demark with the POCO-they inspect my work but the POCO is responsible for theirs.  I just feel bad for the POCO employee that has to go work on this in a thunderstorm with ever thing moving around!
