I am currently in the UK and I have become fascinated with all the wall plugs like I never was before... Tomorrow I will be checking out my cousin's fuse box

Wish I could tell you Steve. My time in the UK was so short that I was very happily distracted with my family and friends to even think about looking in someones fuse box - what was I thinking??
I had the conversation about the British plug with a couple of folks though - both of whom thought I was a little odd !!!
Back now but I had a great time and a very necessary break.

The best heavy duty extension cords have a metal braid, a bit like the screen on a coax cable.  This braid is tied to the earth pin.  If the cord is cut, the braid increases the probability that active/live will be shorted straight to earth, rather than finding another path through a victim.

I have some like that.  We use the armoured cable at work to wire up machines.  There are always a few odd pieces lying around waiting for a new use!
