That actually works.

Back in the early 80s there was a commercial product that did exactly that.  It had 2 prongs that stuck up-you placed the hotdog on them and turned it on and it cooked.

Hah!

I did this in grade school (around '60, or '61) by using a stripped lamp cord and two 16p nails. No switch. No tape. Mustard only.  Yummy!

If you put two in series and double the voltage the current draw still doubles.

Has anyone done a monte carlo analysis on hotdog resistance?  If the resistance changes once the cooking process is complete you could have an auto turnoff circuit.

That somewhat reduces the elegance and simplicity of the design.

BTW My parents had one too. That would have been about 1968 or so.  If I recall it does not have a safety switch on the lid.

Back then we had fans with metal blades you could stick your whole hand into.

Of course back then there was a thing called "personal responsibility".

Something sadly missing today.  We expect somebody else to take care of us-so that we can do whatever.

And then if something goes wrong-we can always sue them then have even less responsibility.
