If you put two in series and double the voltage the current draw still doubles.

Not true. Voltage divided by Resistance equals Current and Voltage times Current equals Wattage, so if you double the voltage and double the resistance, the current stays the same but the wattage doubles. This doubled wattage is distributed across two dogs, with each one dissipating half the total wattage. So two hot dogs in series on 240 volts will cook at the same rate as a single dog on 120 volts. Just like two 120-volt light bulbs in series will work properly on 240 volts.

Has anyone done a monte carlo analysis on hotdog resistance?  If the resistance changes once the cooking process is complete you could have an auto turnoff circuit.

They confirm that the hot dog resistance goes up as it cooks. Plus you can stick LEDs in the electrified dog and they will light up from the gradient voltage. Cool.

I first saw this hotdog cooker design in some "Fun for Boys" sort of book in elementary school. What bothered me then, and still bothers me now, aside from the obvious electrical safety issues, is the unknown electrochemical nonsense going on at the interface between the dog and the electrodes. I know it's AC, but still. I'm not going to eat the ends of the dog unless you use, say, Pt forks.

And now I'm one (useless) post closer to winning my own hotdog cooker. -F

Even then, the ends won't be cooked as there is no voltage drop (practically) and therefore, no current through the length of hotdog which has fork in it.

Yep, you're prob right. The current density will assume a "field line" pattern that's highly dependent on the shape of the electrodes. It seems you'd want a small cup, or even a ring, that tightly fits each end of the hotdog to get the most uniform current density. Oh crap! I'm designing one now. Stop me.

Or how about the "transverse mode" cooker? Press the hotdog between two energized plates. That might get good uniformity (and higher current for a given voltage). Thermal conductivity works in our favor, evening out the current problems. I'll be quiet now. -F
