Bantam patch bay cables?
« on: September 06, 2014, 06:38:35 PM »

I have a client with a bantam patch bay. I just ordered them a bunch of additional cables and unfortunately they are the TT (tiny telephone) size which are closer to 1/8" plugs then the 1/4" ones I need.

Anyone help me out with some options? Everyplace online I am only finding the TT version.

I don't mind making them if I can find the Neutrik or Switchcraft part.

Thanks!

If he has a "bantam" patch bay, TT is the right size. If they don't fit it is a regular patch bay. If you are looking for any kind of patch bay, or patch bay accessories the place to go is Audio Accessories in Marlow, NH. If they don't have it it probably doesn't exist.

No such thing.
Bantam and TT (tiny telephone) are synonymous.
1/4" and Telephone are synomous.

Bantam and 1/4" are two different connectors.

Lee, I am now seeing that "Bantam" seems to be the mini size. However I assure you these connectors have the same style tip as the Bantam TT but are in a 1/4" shaft size.

I can't get a pic tonight, but I have had my hands on them many times.

Thanks for the help

The tip style to which you refer is Telephone style and was carried over to Tiny Telephone style.  1/4" TRS connectors can be used in a patch bay but standard 1/4" patch bay cables have the tip style to which you refer.

Patch bay cables do not have standard 1/4" plugs on them, they have telephone plugs. They come in 1/4" and bantam sizes. You are looking for 1/4" patch cords like those can get at Audio Accessories.

Standard 1/4" cables may work in a 1/4" patch bay, but they are not exactly the right size, and not the right contact points.

Thank you Mac. I knew I did not need 1/4", just giving reference. I will get with Audio Accessories for some Telephone plugs.

Mac,
I may be incorrect but here is what I have learned over the years.
A 1/4" TRS is the size for a Telephone style patch bay.  The Telephone connector does have a different tip style.  These are very typical for music store equipment but they are not considered professional.
A long frame connector is the style that I believe you are thinking of when you say they are a slightly different size and a slightly different contact point layout than 1/4".  Long frame is sometimes improperly called military patch bay/plug.  Longframe is the standard style for Neve console patch bays, ADC, and many other studio quality patch bays.

Virtually all professional audio patch bays are now TT/Bantam (11/64").

Here is a pic. It is flanged a bit on the tip where the contacts are.

From appearance that should be what switch craft calls " 1/4" long frame "

I've always called the plug pictured a "Long Frame" plug to differentiate them from regular 1/4" or TRS plugs. Pretty sure that using standard 1/4" or TRS in a Long Frame patch bay will wreck the patch bay by bending the contacts out too much.

Thank you gents. 1/4" "long frame" sounds like the consensus?

Does anyone know the reason for the shape of the telephone type connectors?  I always assumed it was so the tip didn't make contact with any contacts other than its own when being inserted.
