I remember when line arrays started being the popular thing. The whole industry was all about trying to sell you on line arrays. Sounds like it may still be? A 50' X 50' room is pretty small for any size line array.

Needless to say I'm not a line array fan. After many years of working with many different models, I have come to the conclusion that although they do some things really well, It is not a perfect and infallible tool.

Well, I am certain Tim Mc will be along in a moment to make this point... but as we all know, a line array is just another tool in the box. Is it the answer to every situation? Of course not. But when well designed and deployed, is it superior to a point source system, when the circumstances call for it?? Yeah. If you have 12,000 people, expecting EDM levels, that's gonna be a bit hard with an SRX rig. Haha.

The key is knowing when to (or not to) recommend a type of speaker system, and it's our job to edumacate the clients as to what they need.

On the other hand, if someone comes along and tells me they have 400 people coming for a wedding, and THEY CAN HAS A LINE ARRAY! and an SL250, and hand us $15K-- well, I am not going to say no.

And if you have 100,000 people and throws of 800' with the wind blowing-THAT is going to be real hard for a line array---------------------

A "point source" is your friend in this case :)

I should clarify a bit more. Flown vs ground stacked. (When I think point-source, I am envisioning ground stacked... Ugh, not being clear. And now I have to deal with being called out by Ivan. I need a beer. And I don't even drink beer.)

It looks as if someone has found some truths, half truths and buzzwords and mixed them in with some nonsense and mythology.

Why does a "point source" have to be ground stacked?

In any case-getting the PA UP is a good idea.

In order to be anywhere near a fair comparison-the playing field has to be equal.  Things like-physical size-weight-cost-amplifier power-processing and so forth all matter in the end.

You can't take one aspect of one type of cabinet and compare it to a different one of another cabinet.

I say let's just out the source of the pamphlet touting the wonders of the "Backasswards Line Array"

Such crap really shouldn't be tolerated.

Didn't Clair Bros. have a giant point source rig that they flew for big names like AC/DC?
