Peavey USB-p

You do not want to use the headphone output.  You want a USB device.

To expand on this thought: internal audio devices are notoriously noisy (and crappy sounding). The Peavey USB-p moves the digital to analog converter outside of the EMI/RFI noisy environment of the computer. The bonus is that the USB-p has XLR transformer balanced outputs, so there is no need for a direct box. And since it's a USB "class" device, the operating system will load it using built-in drivers, so no need to install drivers.

For those situations where someone won't let you plug in a USB device, go with the Whirlwind pcDI.

I'm sure it works great. There have a been a few occasions though when I've tried to get cheapy PC laptop users to use my USB interface (driverless as well) but they refuse because it's not something they've ever done and want to "use something they understand." So I've given up for the most part on those folks. The only time I'm more insistent about using my own USB interface is when I'm having them plug directly into a my A&H ZED14 which has a built in interface. For some reason, know nothing users seem less adverse to that. And a lot of DJs coming into my venue these days have fancy USB interfaces of their own already. Many have XLR outs and don't have ground related noise issues, so they get a direct connection. If they don't have XLR, they get the pcDI ;)

Well, since this is for a single, fixed use, I think it's a safe bet for the OP.  No variables attend.

The USB-p is driver-less and shows up in the system preferences as an audio device.  Simply select it and go.  It also will do stereo or sum to mono.

It is the right tool for the job.  Works with any computer, no driver required.  Affordable and rugged.

+1    (Bought on Dick's advice from an earlier thread, one of the best investments I've made. If anyone's plugging into my system, this is what they get, period.)

I got mine when Mac said it was a go-to device.  When Mr. Kerr speaks, I listen.

I bought two. At $50 it's hard to beat.

As to the drivers, it uses USB audio, which is hard coded into any modern OS. It's not an ASIO device.

The one drawback is that the video guys who are using playback pro are hesitant to let you jack anything into USB, lest you break their precious dongle connection.

Has anyone tried the Radial USB Pro? A bit pricey.

Wow. I have to get one of these. I'm currently using an old M-Audio Mobile Pre USB interface (headphone out to Y/RCA). Thanks Dick!

p.s. I will see an improvement in sound using this over the M-Audio, right? I've never been happy with the sound I'm getting from the Mobile Pre.

Looking at retiring. Local PA market has shrank to 2 guys with guitars and bose l1 compacts or expecting full line array and 16 movers on stage for $300... no middle left going back to event DJ stuff, half the work for twice the pay.
