EAW LA460 in bi-amp
« on: July 26, 2014, 09:06:46 PM »

In a few weeks, I need to add a DSP to a system with EAW LA460 cabinets as the mains. I'll be bi-amping them.

This is a three way cabinet, 15/8/CD.

In my experience, a bi-amped three way cabinet has a passive crossover between the mid and high allowing the woofer to have it's own amp channel. The EAW nomenclature leaves me a bit confused:

"In bi-amplified mode, an internal passive filter network shall provide fourth order acoustical crossover and system equalization between the low and mid frequency sections."

Are they calling the 8 AND compression driver the "mid section"?

OR is the passive crossover between the 15 and 8 leaving the compression driver on it's own?

I read that to mean the second. Lo=15+8, Hi=CD. They have built cabinets both ways.

Lo=15+8

Well that's pretty silly.

Look like you're right Mac. The power handling shows 500 watts low/mid and 150 for highs.  :(

That hasn't been determined yet, we're trying to use the venue's existing mix of older QSC & Crown amps. I think they'll need one new amp so I would choose an Ashly KLR3200 for the low section of these speakers.

From what I can remember it was the 15+8 passive as Mac said. The reason was to do with the time/phase alignment available with a passive crossover.  The 15+8 passive with active HF worked better than the 15 active with passive 8+HF... they did sound very nice.

OK, thanks for that. I look forward to messing with them.
