If you need to adjust the graphics sufficiently often that it gets in the way of mixing, I submit that there are problems that need to be addressed.
Agreed. Now that I finally have monitors that sound pretty good on their own, I find I rarely have to touch the graphics. A 4-band PEQ usually does everything I (or the musicians) need.
However, if you want to wring them out (spelling intentional), one trick is to temporarily put a comp on the output. Set the threshold quite low, maybe -40 dBFS, and add about 10 dB of makeup gain. This will cause the monitor to feed back, but it will settle at a fairly low level, not tear your head off. Then use the GEQ (or PEQ) in the console to find those nodes, and notch them out. Once you're done, bypass the comp, and you should be ready to go.
