wired balanced headphone amp suggestion
« on: May 28, 2014, 01:11:12 PM »

I am looking for a decent headphone amp to use on stage.  The FOH board will feed IEMs for 9 people on 7 mixes.  I currently use some Rolls RA53b and am looking for a substitute.  The Rolls is great, but doesn't have a mono out option and has more connectivity that I have use for.  If nothing better is mentioned, I'll be buying more of these Rolls units.

Features I want:
Sounds good
Balanced xlr in
Mono switch on out
volume knob on out
AC powered (IEC in would be perfect)
<$150 preferred

I'd love the ati HDA100 but it's too expensive for me at this time. Wish it had an IEC in option.

Any suggestions?

This should fit the bill.  I have been more than pleased with ours.

In general Elite Core seems to makes great products at their price point!

Because I could not get the church to go for a real pm system I went with a Presonus HP60 It give us 6 channels of headphone amps that are pretty decent. and have a mono switch each channel has a stereo input which I had to adapt to get to mono. You would need 2 of them it looks like.

Kent, Balanced xlr inputs per channel is a must have for me.  Thanks for the suggestion!

Balanced inputs was a must for me too.  I realize that in reality, it may not make a significant difference depending on the situation.  But I sleep better at night knowing the entire system is wired with balanced interconnects.

Elite core, has some real nice products.

Like this little headphone cable extender.

How many mixes do you need?
ProCo sells a device that takes mic cable in and has connections for 4 headphone outputs. Xlr linking for many units. You use a standard power amp

John,  I'll be running 7 mixes in the standard configuration.  You didn't provide a link or model # for the ProCo device, so I don't know if it might work.

I have already ordered 10 of the elite core PMA boxes.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I prefer something with a protective limiter.
