Console for recording mix down of live Dante
« on: April 03, 2014, 01:33:52 PM »

Hello everyone,

I have a project coming up in a couple months that will include 32 channels coming from a live performance over Dante.  I need to take those channels and make a live broadcast stereo mix.  The channels are going to be recorded individually by JoeCo BBR-Dante boxes, and I need to send the stereo mix out on AES.  There are lots of consoles that can do this, but the snag I hit is that the client is insisting on working in 96khz.  The JoeCo has no problem with a 96kbs stream, but I'm having issues finding a console that can do this for me.  I originally planned on using a Yamaha CL-1 but its limited to 48khz.  The Allen and Heath iLive has the same limitation.  I'm going to be working from a very mobile setup so I'd also like to find a console that is rack mountable.  My next thought was a Digico SD11 but I'd have to turn that Dante stream into MADI to make that work.  Does anyone have a recommendation?

What equipment is sending you the original 96k Dante stream?  A console?

Hi Mark,

Its still TBD at the moment, but probably it will be 4x Millennia HV-3R preamps feeding analog into 2x Rednet 2 boxes to get it to Dante.  The Dante then will feed 2x Joe-Co BBR-Dante recorders and the mix down console.

What is the rationale for mixing a live broadcast at 96k ?

None at all in my opinion.  The producer is insisting on the 96k for all the audio.  I fought that fight and lost.  I think that the reasoning is that they want to be able to release a post-production mastered version in 96/24.  Even my broadcast mix has to be delivered at 96k.

KT DN9650, Dante in, MADI out to an Digico SD11 or Midas Pro1, perhaps?

Pro Tools HDX rig, I/O via Rednet 5 could do it too.

My first thought was going with a RedNet 6 Dante to Madi convertor and a SD11.  I may still go that route, but I was hoping to avoid that extra piece of gear and extra conversion.

Ah, I forgot about the Rednet 6. That sounds like a plan. What do you mean exactly when you say extra conversion? Rednet 2s right to switch, torednet 6, format conversion with no sample rate conversion, to Digico and AES out.

If that is a requirement for the broadcast then you have few options for consoles that will do Dante at 96kHz.  I assist with a weekly live symphony broadcast and we do everything at 96 (with HV3R's and Grace M802's) for the mixing and recording but we down convert to 48 and send a two track to the broadcast feed.  My suggestion, if it were acceptable for the broadcast side only, would be to use the second AES output of each Grace and run them into 4-RME ADI-192 units.  These would sample rate convert and let you run AES at 48 kHz to whatever console you want that will accept AES.  Most of them will, certainly more than will handle 96 kHz Dante.

Edit to say I am getting old.  The Millennia units don't have dual AES outputs, the Grace do.

Rednet6 Dante to Madi should be lossless.  PM5D looks like it would work as another option.
