Which tops should I choose?
« on: March 22, 2014, 05:00:55 pm »

Hello all.

Here are my needs: This year I have to make PA on outside competitions (so far I had 2x RCF art 310A and some other active speakers, they weren't bad, but I need a little more.)

I'm thinking of buying 4x tops. I need high SPL (because sometimes we playing effects or little parties etc). I only want active system.
I have MAX 3600 $ for this. But here the prices are much higher then in USA. Almost 1.5x

Some tops I looked at (and available at local shops):

EV ELX 115p : good price, but somewhere I read that the SPL is a lie, and can only do ~124dB max. (because same drivers like other series speakers)

HK Audio L5 115 FA: very nice user reviews about it

RCF speakers: wood enclosure series are very expensive, plastics maybe not sounding as good? but I'd also listen anybody's opinion.

JBL PRX are also too expensive for me.

Turbosound Milan M15 is also plastic, I haven't heard it.

Later when I have money I would enlarge the system with subs (Cerwin-vega folded horns or matching subs for the tops)

I'm interested in other manufacturers too.

Please if anybody has opinions, tell me! Thank you

Hi Onlin, Why specifically do you want 4 speakers instead of 2?

In general 2 louder speakers will sound better than 4 softer speakers, so what is your requirement to suggest 4?

Turn down what's too loud.

Is that in USD?

As Mark mentioned, why 4 cabs? Doing 2 cabs per side?

Add the Yamaha DSR112, very good and loud. I don't go 15 because it's muddy for mids.

A pair of EV ZXA5s, if they can be had within your budget.

I want 4 because in sport shows I have to split the sound (have to make little differences between levels, with 2 pieces I can't solve it, somewhere would be very loud somewhere quiet.)

If you're having to cover specific areas then is the speaker pattern and resulting coverage a factor?

Well there are about 10 different places where I go with the system.

Do you mean horn angles?

By the way 4 tops are enough at every place - 2 aren't.
