LS9 StageMix for iPad release in April.
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:50:02 AM »

I found this news this morning. It's nice to know that Yamaha is continuing to expand their support for stage mix.

After LS9, what console is next?

I'm really hoping for an 01v96 version. That would likely convince me to get an iPad.

Looks like I'll be buying an Apple product for the first time ever then.

Not joining the cult though.

It would probably be worthwhile for Apple to pay for the development of the software. I bet a lot of iPads will get sold for remote control of consoles as the software expands.

For small gigs, I can save you needing a snake!! That pretty much pays for the iPad right there. Plus the added cool factor.

How many do you think will be sold for console control? 1000? Probably. 5000? Possibly. 10,000? Not likely. Their goal is 40,000,000 for this year alone. I don't think there is much return on investing in developing 6-10 different apps with a half dozen different companies when those companies are doing it on their own.

I think it is more likely that console manufacturers will want to create apps to keep or build their customer base.

Agreed.

Although, when I was looking at various platforms for using RealVNC, the light weight of the iPad and the battery life made it the best candidate for me... but then I bought a used one to save some money. I bet others might do the same, especially now that a new model is out and the old models are $100 less than they used to be... used ones even less than that.

It seems that Apple can enjoy the adoption of the iPad for a number of uses without funding the software development, and there are many developers who want their apps to be housed on that platform. Works well for them!  :)

It better be the PM5D. (not that I'm looking forward to rejoining the Mac.cult after getting rid of my iPhone)

iPad apps for other consoles

An iPad app for the PM5D seems unlikely, there is no easy network interface to a 5D. I expect in the future new Yamaha consoles will all have a network interface, and an iPad app. A&H and Presonus have them as well, any other console with an easy network interface is a candidate for a tablet controller.

I don,t  think Apple will develop an app. for anything like this.

I think we will see a free or $0.99 app, that will do basic control.

The real question should be, Why does Yamaha not develop the app., offer it free, and sell more Desks?

I am amazed that many company's do not support the Mac Platform.

Just my thoughts.

Isn't that exactly what Yamaha is doing? And before StageMix, with Studio Manager, has been doing for many years.

You are correct, I was actually referring to the full line of Yamaha or anyone else's products running on either Platform.
(Firmware/Software)

Like Elation's SD-2 or BBE or many, many others.

One of the first things we look for, Is the product Mac Compatible? If not, we have to really think about it, or find something that is Mac Compatible.

I am not suggesting that Mac is the best, It's just I feel very comfortable with that platform.

I do use windows to run the software side of the SD-2 and DS-48, However I would prefer to run only OS-X.

Yamaha gives you an IPad if you buy a M7CL
The Ipad has the app on it, both IPad and app for free

(after you pay for a 20K console)

I too am wishing for this, but I am not holding my breath.   Its too bad that the underlying platform for all the Yamaha consoles isn't more closely related.

I think I will get AirFader for my tablet rather than buy an iPad to get the Yamaha app. Stage mix is pretty limited in what it lets you do. I found the limits on what even SM let me do to be frustrating.
Neither of the Yamaha apps are going to let me tune my delays for outputs from out where you can hear them when the mixer has to be back or side stage.

Now all I need is Avid's IPad app for the SC48 and Ill be set.  Wonder if that will happen?  I know I know VNC is cool but I want to have background control so the IPad has sends on faders and the surface user has mains fader control.
