Cubo 18 Build
« on: January 26, 2014, 09:26:25 PM »

I plan on building a few cubo 18s . I dont have any 18s laying around except a few drivers from a set of Behringer VP1800S. Will that work at all? What drivers would you recomend?

You'll probably find more people familiar with that box on the speakerplans and freespeakerplans fora, if you haven't asked there yet that'd probably be a good idea.

A tapped horn is very different than other bass cabinets.  It is VERY picky about the driver parameters.

Yes all drivers will "make sound"-but not as much as the proper driver would do.

The Cubo is some kind of hybrid design between a TH, reflex, and bandpass, I don't know what you would call it and I don't know if the designer even knows what to call it, but it does offer gains in output over a reflex and it's not terribly picky about drivers.. though there is an optimal driver specification for it. I built a 15" version as a test and loaded a driver that falls slightly outside optimal but it still delivers upwards of 6db gain over the same driver in a reflex box. The only way you will know for sure how well those Behringer drivers will work(short of building a Cubo to test) would be to measure them with a device like the Parts Express woofer tester to generate TS parameters for the driver, and then compare that to what is optimal for the Cubo.

I Can only tell you of my first hand experience with the Cubo 18,
I've built a pair (still have another pair to build) of Cubo-18-570 Extended (If you do a search for Cubo18-570 you should find the thread I started on speakerplans.com)

I Loaded mine with the Eighteen Sound 18NLW9400, A very capable driver.
I use it exclusively for live music and it's a very impressive little Box.
My Version's dimensions are 620h x 650d x 570w so About 230 Liters. I narrowed the cab's original design width from 620mm to 570mm for ease of transport,
I had built prototype cabs out of mdf of the full sized orginal plans and compared it to the narrower 570mm wide version i built.
Measurements showed the 570mm wide cab lost about 2Hz in extension, So IMO not enough to warrant going with it wider and transport unfriendly original design.

I've been using them for about the past year now and I'm still impressed every time I fire them up.

What did you use to search with?  What do you call "relevant results"?

There is lots of information/discussions etc out there.
