Increasing Mic inputs
« on: December 20, 2013, 01:52:50 PM »

Is it possible to boost the number of mic inputs by connecting a preamp to my mixer. If so what would the connections look like.

This is my mixer

although I didn't pay even half what it is advertised at here!

You should be able to connect two mic preamp outputs to the Aux Returns on that mixer.  You won't be able to send those inputs to the monitor bus or use the FX engine if you connect to both Aux Returns.  You may want to disable the onboard FX too.  It looks like 12:00 is "off".

Do you need to have more inputs or are you just being curious?

Yes, you could find a way to connect more mics.  BUT...

As Corey points out, they will not be fully integrated as the only thing you can do is have them come out of the mains.  No monitors, no channel EQ, nada.

If you're just looking to connect stuff you already have, then go ahead and try it out.

If you need more inputs, get something with more inputs.  A bargain isn't a bargain if you have to kludge and work-around for so-so results.

Not in a very useful way. The wrong piece of gear at the right price is still the wrong piece of gear.

+1     There are deals to be found on low cost powered mixers all over the place.   The cost of an 8 XLR input mixer is not that much more than a 6 or 8.    Get one of those and your system is much more usable than it would be by tacking on a preamp or two.
