Improper outlet use
« on: November 23, 2013, 01:53:09 AM »

A lighting friend sent me this. It was in a banquet room
UPDATE
We were in this room saturday for a fashion show. I spoke with the banquet manager about the label. It is so the staff knows which outlet to use for their portable sound system. There are several outlets on the same circuit on each wall for fluff lighting and that one outlet is on its own circuit.

To be more dodgy it should have been labelled with a post-it note, between the faceplates but ever so slightly closer to the non powered one.

You're right, it should have said "mic inlet".  ::)

I'm concerned that 1) I didn't become a lawyer and 2) where is this located.  This is a tort lawyers wet dream.

If you meter it do you get 48VDC?

Actually, I think it *IS* a microphone, cleverly concealed as a typical receptacle. (Wonder who's surveilling?) Unfortunately, someone plugged a phone charger in it, obstructing the acoustic path to the microphone, so they had to mark it.

In all seriousness, is it really a microphone jack, or is it a genuine 120V outlet that's on a dedicated circuit to provide power to a portable PA system, and marked by someone who doesn't have a clue?

We need eyes and a meter on this much maligned receptacle. Can the OP make contact with the "lighting friend in the banquet room"?

I'm betting this is an actual microphone input since crazy things happen in places like banquet rooms. But there's a slim possibility it's just a 120-volt receptacle earmarked for the portable PA system. The "collective" wants to know...
