Yamaha CL series version 1.7 firmware announced
« on: November 12, 2013, 01:12:34 PM »

Yamaha says that version 1.7 of the CL series firmware will be releasdd by the end of the year. No mention of being able to assign output channels to DCA groups, which is a function that I really need.

I was told at AES that output DCAs were on the list of things to add. I notice that custom fader layers can now be on a scene by scene basis, something the theater guys were asking for.

Yeah, the custom fader layers will be cool. It will be interesting to see how they work.

Looks like a nice evolution in the software, with some useful new features.

My want list still includes placing the input delay before prefader sends.

The big missing feature for me is selectable pre/post eq for pre-fader mix send point PER CHANNEL.

CL series firmware 1.7 and matching editor are now posted on the Yamaha website.  The StageMix Facebook page also lists a new version of the iPad app.

Still no printable or exportable version of the patch list in the editor which seems a pretty major short coming at this point.  How hard would it be to create a B&W version of the screen image or an export option for plain tab text files?  Given the channel counts and layers of cross patching in modern digital consoles the ability of the software to deliver a printable copy that can be passed out to stage crews and posted on the side of a stage box is of no small value.

Wotsa matter Justice, the last escapade from Yamaha having everyone roll back their firmware not a confidence builder?   ::) :o

So who's going to be the guinea pig?

Doing it today or tomorrow. I'm not too worried about it.

Done. Major gotcha for me: I backed up the console on a USB stick before the upgrade. After the upgrade I restored from the USB stick and found that anything that wasn't part of a scene (administrator prefs such as UDKs, custom faders, etc.) were forgotten. Makes sense now. My Dante patching was also shuffled a bit.

However, once I had gotten to upgrading CL Editor on my laptop, I sinc'ed "PC>console" and now it has the option to include Dante patching in that sync. That sync also included all of the user prefs and they were properly restored.

Biggest pain is having to use Windows to upgrade the Yamaha firmware on the RIO boxes. Console doesn't care, as it upgrades firmware from the USB, and Dante updater runs in either OS. The RIO firmware updater only speaks Windows.

Overall looks like a very worthy update.

I believe that the Dante firmware on the CL consoles still needs to be updated from a Windows computer, in addition to the USB console firmware update.

They did update the Dante firmware with this update - all new version numbers in the CL setup screen.

Scott,
My experience has been different.  I've yet to successfully update Dante from a Windows platform.  On the other hand, I have had zero problems updating CL's or RIO's Dante firmware via OSX platforms.

Still waiting a bit this time around...

Yes... I've only been able to do the Dante firmware updates from an XP machine. Windows 7 never seems to work, though I'm told it should.

I have a Windows 7 laptop that does the job, but my 8.1 won't.

Updated the firmware in our single CL5 and RIO32 boxes today with a minor hiccup.  Seems the default start up condition for the CL console is in redundant network mode.  This prevented the number one box from being recognized so it took some time and aggravation in reboots and reloading of software before I noticed that little detail on the Dante screen.  Other than that all worked as advertised… so far.

Would you place the difficulty with Yamaha or Dante? The future of Dante is very much tied to easy "plug'n'play". Otherwise it is on its way to  another wayside network attempt.

I don't know, but Yamaha needs to get with Audinate and figure out a much simpler update solution for all of their products. Having to make 6 different updates (CL firmware, RIO Firmware, Dante update) on three different devices is a PITA.

It's Audinate's update software, which Yamaha bundles with their own updates. I don't recall having had any difficulties with Yamaha's own Rio updater.

The 'difficulty' and resultant chasing of tails was entirely my failing to see that the console had come up in a different network state than I had expected.  My reloading the software a second time was because I ASSumed that the firmware update had failed rather than there being a misconfiguration.

Plug and play is only as good as the player.   Much as I would like all of the vendors I buy from to make their user interfaces as well thought out as say an iPhone I still find the Yamaha / Dante implementation more flexible and manageable than some of the competitors.

Took the dive: Updated all components today, both CL5 and RIO. Everything went without a hitch.. Really only got to do some functionality checks and pass some playback through the RIO box today. I'll get to prove reliability next week when the shows start back up; or I'll be reporting on how badly it FUBAR-d  :P. Definitely some cool stuff in this update, let's hope we don't all have to roll back! (knock on wood)

I have a Windows 7 laptop that does the job, but my 8.1 won't.
Hmm.. Ran the entire update process with my MS Surface Pro (8.1). No issues at all. DO make sure your firewall is OFF (that did almost get me).
Otherwise everything went according to Yamaha's How-to-update guide(s)..

Happy Updating!

Kevin and I have had identical experiences with the Dante updates and Windows. The first updates, over a year ago, I did it all with Windows. The last one, two windows boxes would not connect to the devices to do the Dante updates. All security programs disabled and shut down, all firewalls off (only after disconnecting from the internet, of course).

Actually, since I have one of each (Mac and PC), it's more convenient to use two machines so you aren't changing network settings between Rio and Dante updates. I think Kevin is doing the same thing.

I'm just poking around to see if anyone has updated and how the updates went. For time's sake, I really need to update both of ours next week.

I did ours Monday or Tuesday. Pretty much the same as all the previous updates. I use one computer, but I do all the Rio updates w/ the Yamaha stuff in a batch first, then change the computer settings and do all the Audinate updates in a second batch.
