Political conference - need scenic backdrop ideas?
« on: September 23, 2013, 12:46:28 PM »

I am production manager for a fairly high profile (and growing) annual political conference.

I am struggling to find a good scenic / backdrop that works for us. It has to be video friendly, and visually appealing for those attending in person.

Any thoughts?

Show a panorama of Rome Burning while Nero fiddles. :-)

Good luck

Any chance of a hard set?  You can incorporate the projection screens/video elements…if you designed it "right" you could do projection mapping, too.

Have you thought about projecting on/through a cyc?  You could uplight it for effect, then use projection mapping, edge-blending, and/or lighting control to frame out defined projection areas.

Can you provide pictures of this sort of thing?

I am an audio guy by trade, and have very little experience in lighting / scenic sort of stuff.

Have a budget in mind? If not, the sky is the limit. How large is the stage?

Budget is limited, stage is small (a podium and two tables for a panel discussion), but it needs to look good.

Here is a media report of the event: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xh3M1Nr2LJ4

Matt,

Those look like acrylic panels, uplit with Color Kinetics Colorblast12 lighting instruments (patriotic theme, of course).  Those panels probably take some assembly.

There's also a good stage wash, and backlighting to provide some separation from the black drape background.

For a hard set, screen surfaces and their frames can be incorporated so that they blend in seamlessly.

Jordan,  Off Topic so I apologize in advance to the OP, but in the bottom picture was there any issue getting enough gain before feedback with the placement of the speaker stacks? Just curious how this performed and any issues.

Thanks,

Bill
