It's all good.....

Especially if it saves someone's life.

No worries, Mike.  I'm sure it takes time to get used to that new-found power ;-)  Judgment calls are always the hardest.

Every time I do a gig with a generator I ask the provider "Where's the ground rod?" All I get is a funny look and the standard reply.  "It's grounded to the generator."

Please clarify. Shouldn't there be a copper ground rod attached to the generator that goes to earth?

Thanks

I found this example which explains when, and when not, to earth ground a generator.

I'm going to print this out at read it at length, but it seems like a good guide to generator grounding. I'll report back later once I absorb the entire piece.

How is the absorption going on this topic? Not that I am in any rush in Wisconsin as outdoor events with generators for us are over with.

I should have some time to re-read this article by the weekend. Thanks for reminding me.

Mike,
I bought one of these kits last year, and still haven't installed it but will install it next weekend. Any opinion?

I have always thought that those kits are a very reasonable logical way of connecting a home backup.  It let's you decide what ckts will be transferred to the generator and keeps you from overloading the generator.  A side benefit over a whole house transfer is you have other ckts to tell you when city power comes back on.

I have a Whole house transfer switch on the output of my main panel in the garage that feeds a sub panel in the basement. (I transfer the house power but not the garage.)  It works fine and it used the hardware I had on hand, but I must, using a flashlight, go to the basement and turn off the breakers to everything I don't want powered, then go the the garage and throw the main transfer.

That's the gold-standard way of connecting a generator to your house when the generator capacity won't run EVERYTHING. I've always been a little squeamish about the generator inter-lock kits which is basically a metal slide that only allows you to turn on the generator breaker once the incoming panel breaker is turned off. Not automatic, and may not be code compliant in your area: http://www.interlockkit.com/ilkitworks1.htm but certainly an inexpensive way to add a backup generator to your house power.
